Providing incremental movement and an ability to hold position make stepper motors an interesting option for many projects like 3D printers and CNC machines.
The motors are driven by a stepper motor controller from a microcontroller which tells the motor to move by little steps of a turn in either direction.
Stepper motors are used in things like ink jet printers and scanners where they can be heard making a whining noise as they quickly make little steps in either direction. The motors will hold their position while power is applied but will spin freely without power. They use a lot of power compared with brushed DC motors however they excel when little tiny movements are needed.

These small steppers are a great way to get things moving, especially when positioning and repeatability is a concern. When using a current limiting driver such as the Easydriver or Big Easydriver, a 12 volt power supply can be used as long as you adjust the current level to 400mA or less. More Details...

These steppers have a threaded shaft, which allows them to be used as a linear actuator. As the motor runs, it moves along the shaft at a specific rate of 1cm per 5 full rotations. These are a good choice for linear motion where precision and repeatability are important. More Details...
