This infrared sensor detects objects up to 3cm away. With an infrared LED and a phototransistor it detects objects or black-white changes for line following robots or edge detection.

Internally this sensor has an infrared LED that emits light that is reflected back from objects and detected by the photo transistor. Hooking it up requires a few resistors as this is really two components in one. Check this hookup guide for details.
